What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is one of the more affordable and easier cosmetic procedures that can improve the appearance of your smile. In fact, with one visit, you could get a more attractive smile and a boost to your self-confidence! This procedure is most commonly used to treat teeth that are chipped, decayed, or discolored.

It can also be used to make teeth appear longer and close spacing between teeth. In addition to regular dental bonding in Newport Beach, Dr. Vartanian is one of few dentists to offer the advanced BioClear bonding system. BioClear utilizes its patented matrix system to shrink wrap a tooth and close spaces, as well change tooth shape, size and color.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a cosmetic procedure that is an alternative to porcelain veneers. Dental bonding uses a material called ‘composite’ made of resin to repair decayed, chipped or worn teeth. The treatment works by placing a tooth-colored resin over the affected tooth. We take special care to choose a resin that matches the natural look of your teeth, so your bonded tooth will blend perfectly with the rest of your smile. The resin is then hardened using a special ultraviolet light, which bonds the resin to your tooth in its final shape. You can even treat multiple teeth in a single visit!

BioClear

BioClear lasts longer, as the composite used is of the warm injectable type. Because BioClear composite is easier to sculpt and the tooth matrices allow for greater accuracy, your teeth will look like ideal, naturally beautiful teeth. There is no reduction done to the teeth at all, and BioClear is more stain resistant than standard bonding because it is in liquid form before it is hardened.

BioClear utilizes a specially designed ‘tooth matrix’ that looks like a clear envelope for the tooth. After placing the tooth matrix around the tooth, composite is injected into the matrix. It is warmed up, allowing the composite to be molded with precision. Then the composite is cured.

BioClear vs. regular bonding

BioClear lasts longer, as the composite used is of a higher quality. Because BioClear composite is easier to sculpt and the tooth matrices allow for greater precision, your teeth will look like ideal, naturally beautiful teeth. There is no damage done to the tooth at all, and BioClear is more stain resistant than standard bonding. BioClear also requires less time to perform.

Aftercare

After regular dental bonding or BioClear, it is recommended that patients avoid foods and drinks that can stain like tea, coffee, berries, and red wine, for at least 48 hours. Patients should also become diligent with their oral hygiene.

Brushing twice a day and flossing before bed are a must. To make BioClear last, patients should have routine dental cleanings and exams at least twice a year.

Can BioClear or cosmetic bonding improve my smile?

The short answer is yes! If you want a more attractive smile but don’t want to invest in porcelain veneers, BioClear and composite bonding can make a significant improvement. Below are some signs that BioClear or teeth bonding could be right for you:

  • You have black triangles between your teeth
  • Your teeth have chips or uneven edges
  • You don’t want to reduce your original tooth structure
  • You don’t have many weeks to complete dental treatment

Years of healthy, good-looking teeth

With proper care, BioClear will last 7-10 years. After that period, chips or discoloration may become evident. A benefit of BioClear is that it can be repaired or refurbished, eliminating the need for a complete redo. Standard bonding can last 3-5 years, though chewing on ice or other hard items can dislodge the composite earlier. Staining is also more prevalent with regular bonding.

BioClear will leave teeth with a good contour and shine, and correct pesky ‘black triangles’ between the teeth. Black triangles usually occur in patients who have had braces, Invisalign, or gum disease. BioClear can also extend short teeth and correct tooth ridges.
