What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening procedures brighten the appearance of a patient’s teeth, sometimes by as many as 5 to 10 shades in a single session. According to the American Dental Association, teeth whitening has become one of the most popular aesthetic dental treatments among patients. Professional teeth whitening services can be performed in an office setting or done at home by a patient. In comparison to over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments, professional teeth whitening uses stronger whitening agents that deliver faster and more effective results.

Why should I choose a dentist over store-bought teeth whiteners?

There are countless over-the-counter whitening agents, but none are as effective as the professional teeth whitening systems available in a dentist’s office. Dentists have access to products with more concentrated whitening agents that yield better results more quickly, and usually with less tooth sensitivity afterward. Teeth whitening is completely safe and does not damage tooth enamel because it does not interfere with the tooth structure.

How does teeth whitening work?

Our teeth whitening in Newport Beach is a simple in-office process that takes no more than one hour. At the Newport Institute for Dentistry, we utilize the Zoom teeth whitening system. Our staff will seat you and place protective eyewear.

Then, the teeth are coated with a special gel solution. An ultraviolet light is used to activate the whitening gel. Each light session lasts for 15 minutes and can be repeated as many as three times per visit.

Preparing for professional teeth whitening

For the best results, Dr. Vartanian will ask if your teeth have been professionally cleaned recently. This is to remove tartar and plaque and ensure the teeth are cleaned for the best bleaching results possible. For those with sensitive teeth, consult our offices to discuss the possible use of ACP gel to reduce post-treatment sensitivity.

For 24 hours after your teeth whitening procedure, avoid drinking dark beverages like red wine, coffee, tea, and colored soft drinks. Highly pigmented foods like berries should not be eaten. Sensitivity is normal, and can last from a few days to 1-2 weeks. Some patients may receive Zoom whitening at-home touch-up kits if necessary.

It is normal to experience some tooth sensitivity following a professional whitening treatment. Depending on your results and long-term teeth whitening goals, you may also be sent home from your visit with an at-home whitening kit for later use.

Is teeth whitening for you?

Do you have stained, yellowing teeth? If so, teeth whitening could vastly improve the beauty of your smile. Below are some considerations to keep in mind if pursuing teeth whitening:

  • You don’t have multiple crowns or fillings in your front teeth
  • You are aware that existing dental work will not lighten to match whitened teeth, and may need to be replaced to match whiter teeth
  • You have healthy teeth and gums
  • You are not pregnant
  • You are not sensitive to whitening agents
