What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made dental prosthetic that can replace or protect damaged or decayed teeth. Dr. Vartanian creates a custom dental crown in Newport Beach that effortlessly blends in with the rest of your teeth. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering that restores the shape, strength, size, and aesthetic appearance of a decaying or damaged tooth underneath. Once cemented in place, a dental crown covers the entire portion of your tooth above the gum line. Dental crowns help restore damaged or weakened teeth, and are great for treating cavities that are too large for a standard filling. Crowns can also correct oddly shaped or small teeth, as well as be used to balance your bite.

What is a dental bridge?

When there is more than one missing tooth, a dental bridge can serve as a missing tooth replacement. Dental bridges are customized dental prosthetics that replace missing teeth. Crowns are placed on either side of the missing tooth to secure the bridge in place. Bridges look completely natural, and are tailored to fit your mouth. Dental bridge helps to maintain the bite structure and jaw alignment, as well as fill in spaces in your smile. Dental bridges are placed in a similar fashion to crowns and can also help you chew more comfortably.

How are dental crowns placed?

First, Dr. Vartanian carefully prepares a tiny amount of the tooth structure. Then an impression of the tooth is sent to a dental lab along with photos so a permanent crown can be fabricated. Dr. Vartanian places a temporary crown in until the permanent one is ready. Once fabricated, the permanent crown is securely cemented to the underlying tooth.

Benefits of crowns and bridges

The harmony of your bite can suffer if you have damaged or missing teeth. This can cause pain and make it uncomfortable to eat certain foods. A crown or bridge can help, improving the look of your smile and restoring your mouth to optimum dental health. Some other benefits include:

  • Maintain healthy jaw structures and bite alignment  by filling in gaps between the teeth
  • Help prolong optimal dental structure by ensuring bite pressure is evenly distributed amongst all teeth
  • Correct any speech or eating issues that result from missing teeth

Is a crown or bridge for you?

The best way to determine if you are a candidate for a crown or bridge is to come in for a consultation with Dr. Vartanian. Below are some common reasons that patients receive crowns or bridges:

  • Missing teeth
  • Trouble eating or speaking
  • To restore a dental implant
  • Tooth structure around an existing filing has broken down
  • Dental bridges require attachment via crowns to replace the missing tooth
  • Discolored or malformed tooth needs to be restored to form and function
  • Restore a chipped, cracked tooth or broken tooth.

What are crowns and bridges made out of?

Dental crowns and bridges come in a few different materials. Dr. Vartanian will discuss your dental needs and aesthetic goals to determine which material is most suitable for you. The most common materials used for dental crowns and bridges are listed below:

Metal

Silver and gold are the most common metals used for crowns and bridges. These will not blend in with your natural teeth. However, as much as the color of the restoration is frowned upon, these materials tend to perform for many years without the risk of breakage, giving you longevity and comfort despite the aesthetics.

Porcelain

A very natural-looking restorative option that can be shaded to match your other existing teeth. Porcelain crowns and bridges are just as durable as metal ones. This is a good option for great, natural-looking teeth.

Porcelain fused to metal (PFM)

These are long-lasting and life-like porcelain crowns and bridges, with a metal substructure that can be color matched to your existing teeth.
